SUBJECT: New Single Sign-on (SSO) tool coming to Mines in March
TO: campus email lists

Dear Mines faculty, students, and staff,

I’m excited to announce that Mines will soon move to a modern new secure single sign-on (SSO) tool for access to university systems and applications.

The tool, called Okta, will be accessed via a new portal at my.mines.edu. This portal will simplify multi-factor authentication (MFA) usage and make accessing the systems you are authorized to use easier and more secure.

We’ll gradually roll out the new Okta SSO portal (my.mines.edu) to all students, faculty, and staff over the coming months. The initial launch will occur between Monday, March 20, and Thursday, March 23, with a select number of applications moving to the Okta platform.

At that time, our new MFA tool, Okta Verify, will become available for those who want to start using it, but it will be optional. DUO will remain Mines’s default multi-factor authentication method for the rest of the spring semester.

Starting March 20, you’ll also notice changes to Trailhead as we update to the latest version and the software access icons in Trailhead move to Okta.

The second phase of the rollout will occur after Spring Commencement, over the weekend of May 13. DUO will be shut off at that time, and everyone will have to transition to Okta Verify for MFA. This transition will complete the move to Okta and prepare us for the Workday integration on July 1.

More details about the system rollout are available on the CIO blog at https://it.mines.edu/blog-okta/.

We realize the timing of this rollout may be inconvenient to some, but there is never a perfect time to make these system changes. I appreciate your support as we move to ensure easy authorized access and increased security.

I would appreciate your input, and you can share it directly with me at andrewjmoore@mines.edu.

Thanks,

Andrew Moore
