Subject – Emergency Security Notice

To – faculty, classified, grad, ugrad
Date – 30 June 2021

Print services are being shut down on all ITS managed machines due to a recently announced vulnerability known as PrintNightmare. The vulnerability allows an attacker to take over any machine running the Microsoft print spooler – which is on by default on all windows machines.

Everyone using a personally owned machine or managing their own server is encouraged to shut down print spool services immediately to avoid an account takeover. We have included a YouTube video with instructions on how to shut this service down rapidly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uLZSxS1Dwc If you have local administrative access, just type “net stop spooler” at the windows command prompt.

If you need additional support, please contact the Mines service center at https://helpcenter.mines.eduor 303.384.2345
