Hello Mines!

Welcome to my first of many blogs on the topic of IT solutions. I am happy to have joined Mines in June after an incredible career at Chevron, Sun Microsystems, and the Boulder Valley School District. I bring a customer-centric mindset to Mines, with a focus on supporting our student’’s ability to learn without unnecessary technological hurdles.

That brings me to the topic for my first Mines’ blog: Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), and why does it not remember me?

Without a doubt, MFA provides us with one of the best protections from phishing and malware scams. However, I have heard many times the frustration MFA has caused faculty, staff, and students because of what seems like endless MFA requests through DUO.

There is relief on the horizon, with a 30-day remembrance feature being tested now. If you know your password, are in the same location, and on the same devices, you will only be DUO prompted once every 30 days.

Of course, if you leave the country or change your location from work to home, you will be re-prompted with DUO just to make sure your device was not stolen and being used by a bad actor.

Assuming the testing of MFA with a 30-day remembrance goes well, we will have this new feature rolled out for widespread use by the end of September.

Your input is appreciated and can be shared directly with me at andrewjmoore@mines.edu.

Thanks,
Andrew, CIO (Chief Information Officer)
